Maurice’s main interest is trout fishing, but he also owns a shot gun to frighten ducks with occasionally!
Role: Responsible for the overall operational and financial performance of the region. Maurice is also the National F&G Research Coordinator and has a strong interest in natural resource management, particularly in relation to water and soil issues. Maurice assists with some field work, such as spawning surveys, drift diving, waterfowl counts and ranging. Like all staff he spends a fair bit of his time liaising with anglers, hunters, farmers and the general public who are affected by Fish & Game activities. Maurice is an elected member of the Southland Regional Council, Environment Southland. This gives him further opportunity to work in the field of natural resource management to try to ensure the environment is protected into the future.
Originally from Canterbury, where he developed a passion for salmon angling, fly-fishing and hunting, Zane has fished enthusiastically since a child.
Interests include hunting waterfowl, deer, tahr and other big game, sea fishing, spear fishing and scuba diving and introducing his two boys to the amazing opportunities of the New Zealand outdoors.
Role: Zane’s been with Fish & Game for over 10 years and involves himself in the diverse range of subjects that the role requires, including species management work, compliance, access, wetland survey and design, resource management and public awareness.
Stu has been with the ‘firm’ for 40 years, previously with Acclimatisation Societies and then Fish & Game. Stu grew up on the banks of the Waitaki where he enthusiastically pursued the trout and salmon. Stu remains an active trout and salmon angler, although his techniques are somewhat more refined than those early days on the Waitaki! Stu is also a keen duck and goose hunter.
Role: As a general duties officer based at Lumsden, Northern Southland, Stu spends a lot of his time liaising with anglers and hunters in the field and is well placed to discuss consents with rural applicants, or negotiate new access to rivers. Stu’s specific responsibilities include compliance, which involves managing Southland’s team of Honorary Rangers and also angler surveys.
Bill is originally from Christchurch where he and his dad spent weekends trout and salmon fishing on the likes of the Rakaia, Waimakariri and Selwyn rivers, as well as the high country lakes Coleridge, Selfe and Georgina. Hares and rabbits were shot as a sideline. He gained a Wildlife Service traineeship in 1978 specialising in freshwater fisheries based at Rotorua, Turangi and Wanaka before moving to a field officer position in Te Anau in 1982.
Bill was also involved with blue duck and kokako management, and his particularly treasured work capturing kakapo with his dog on Stewart Island. This partnership was utilised for tracking takahe once he came to Te Anau.
Role: As the Fish & Game officer responsible for the Te Anau basin, Bill works from the office at the Wildlife Park which can be a ‘one stop shop’ for a wide range of environmental enquiries. His varied work includes spawning surveys, drift diving, liaison with Meridian Energy and regional authorities re waterway management, compliance, hunter and angler access, and public awareness.
Originally from the Bay of Plenty, Jacob joined the Southland Fish & Game team in September 2008 upon his return from travelling overseas. He is passionate about hunting and gathering; particular interests include hunting waterfowl, deer and small game, sea fishing, spear fishing and scuba diving. Jacob also has a special interest in historic hunting and fishing memorabilia and equipment which reflects the rich and diverse hunting and fishing heritage in New Zealand.
Role: Jacob is responsible for undertaking resource management work with respect to activities that impact upon fish and game populations and habitat in the Southland region. In addition, Jacob under takes general field work such as drift diving, spawning surveys and compliance monitoring and a touch of legal work.
